In this three-session online course, you will learn how to construct geometric border designs inspired by Gothic architectural details such as panelling and guardrails.

What is geometric drawing?
Geometry is a traditional craft used to design motifs and patterns with a compass and ruler, guided by proportion, structure, and creativity. No prior experience in geometry is required—this course is designed for creative people looking to integrate structured, ornamental elements into their work.

 

Using just a compass and ruler, we will break down complex Gothic patterns into simple, step-by-step constructions. Each session will focus on a different motif, with some shading and colouring techniques (such as coloured pencils or watercolours) to enhance your designs—while keeping the main focus on geometric construction.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a collection of hand-drawn Gothic borders that can be beautifully incorporated into calligraphic pieces, illuminated manuscripts, or stand-alone decorative art.
