How to take unique photos of your calligraphy

With Sabine Tack

Starting date : 10 May 2025

Fees : HK$ 1,000 or US$ 130

Workshop Description

Have you ever wondered how to present your calligraphy in a way that matches its beauty? Do you struggle with how to express what your writing means to you through the photos of your works? Do you wonder how you can share a glimpse of your emo)ons with your audience when writing a certain quote?

Do you second guess how to stage a photo of your written art or do you feel lost when it comes to angles, focus points and lightning?

Then this course is for you!

In this class, we will dive deep into all these (and frankly, many more) questions and develop your very own style of photographing your calligraphy by exploring various angles.

You will learn about what makes a photo work in general as well as the special challenges that photographing calligraphy comes with and how to deal with them.

Beside these more theoretical aspects, we will spend a lot of )me with analytical aspects by working through a system of questions that I developed over )me for my own photos.

Week over week, you will discover more about what you want your own photos to be like and the reasons for these decisions. You will be guided to explore your own preferences and develop your own aesthetics when it comes to the pictures of your calligraphy.

At the end of this process, you will know exactly what you want your photos to look like and why. This provides you with a powerful tool to take meaningful photos of your calligraphy in your unique style and the opportunity to adjust said style in the future if needed.

Additionally, we will be working hands-on when it comes to the questions of how to style your photos, where to find props and what to use as backgrounds. Various op)ons of styling will be shared as this too, will be helping you to develop your own aesthetic and visual language.

To round off the class, we will be touching basics of editing.

Please note that this class has a hands-on approach. You will benefit most from the process when you are actively participating, especially by providing the homework asked for (don’t worry, it won’t take much )me and is fun!).
