Ornamental Blooms: An Introduction to Floral Motifs
With Charlotte Dilley
Starting date : 8 March 2025
Fees : HK$ 780 or US$ 100
Workshop Description
Decorative floral ornamentation has long captivated our imaginations with its beauty and elegance, from intricate Mamluk manuscripts to the vibrant tiles of Iznik and the splendid marble inlays of the Taj Mahal.
In this workshop, we will begin to unlock the secrets of the floral style known as Hatayi (Hatâyî in Turkish and Khatei in Persian) that thrives in Turkish, Persian and Islamic artistic traditions.
In the first session we will look at historical examples and identify the characteristic features of this captivating visual language of motifs. We will draw basic forms of the leaf, bud and flower, and I will demonstrate how proportional lines and symmetry are used to guide the shape and overall balance of each motif.
During the second session, we will explore a larger and more intricate Hatayi floral motif and use tracing paper to transfer the completed design. We will look at some different shading and colouring techniques to inspire you to develop our own unique creation.
Downloadable guides and practice sheets will be provided to facilitate ongoing learning.
The ‘Ornamental Blooms’ workshop will provide you with foundational skills and enhance your appreciation of this rich artistic style and I look forward to welcoming you.
