Pat Blair

Since I first received a calligraphy instruction book at age 8, I have been a lover of art and letters. That one small book has turned into a 35 year career! Throughout these years, I have enjoyed many wonderful and memorable experiences! The highlight has been serving 12 1/2 years as the Chief Calligrapher at the White House in Washington, D.C., from which I recently retired. In this role, I directed the production of invitation and menu design for all official and social presidential events, calligraphy of placecards, invitations and menus, certificate and resolution design as well as production of programs and tour books. Prior to that, II served two years as the President of the Washington Calligrapher’s Guild in Washington, DC., chaired the Graceful Envelope Contest sponsored by the US Postal Service, and served as co-director for the International Lettering Conference, Letterforum, held in Virginia. My work has been published in the Calligrapher’s Engagement Calendar, Letter Arts Review, Top 100 New York Calligraphers, Grolier Club Calligraphy Revival, and Martha Stewart Weddings, among others. I have taught at the Loudoun Academy of the Arts, in Virginia, and have been on the faculty of over ten International Calligraphy Conferences. I have been awarded the title Master Penman by the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) for my work . My work today includes accepting commissions for custom invitations, menus and unique projects. My current love is teaching and I offer classes in my home studio as well as classes worldwide. My workshops emphasize the grace and elegance that pointed pen and broad pen letterforms can achieve by paying close attention to the beauty of the form.
